Shoalhaven Homeless Hub

The homeless hub is a safe place for people in need, providing information, referral, emergency provisions (including food, toiletries, tents and sleeping bags), together with access to laundry, bathroom and shower facilities.

At the Hub, clients can access computers and qualified support workers who will assist them with private rental searches, housing paperwork and advocacy, referrals to other local specialist’s homelessness services and other paperwork that may support them out of crisis and homelessness.

Dave’s Journey

Dave aged 59 came to the hub with a 90-day termination notice that he had received from his landlord.

The landlord wanted to sell the property in the growing market to capitalize on his investment.

Dave had been living in his unit with his two pet cats for the past 10 years, always paid his rent on time and kept his place clean and tidy.

The homeless hub worked with another specialist homeless service and our government housing agency, Southern Cross Housing and together we finally reached long term permanent accommodation for Dave and his pets.

The journey for Dave was not easy, and as the final days was coming near Dave was nervous that he would end up sleeping on the streets.

The support workers and Dave contributed daily to applying for properties and to overcome his homelessness but with the limited properties available Dave was not considered for any properties in his price bracket.

At the last moment, transitional housing became available and Dave put his pets into care with Animal Welfare for a short period of time.

On this occasion, Dave had a good outcome with an offer of a community housing property this sadly is not achievable for a lot of our clients.

Dave thanked all the support staff for their professional efforts throughout his stressful time of being at risk of homelessness.
